How to Build a Log Store in a Weekend

Looking for a weekend DIY project that is practical and rewarding? Building your own timber log store is a great way to keep your firewood neat, dry, and ready for use all winter long. With our self-assembly log store, you can complete the job in just a couple of days — no advanced DIY skills required.

In this guide, we will walk you through how to build the log store, step by step, plus some expert tips to ensure your store lasts for years.

Why Invest in a Log Store?

If you use firewood for your stove, burner, or open fire, proper storage is essential. A timber log store offers:

  • Dry firewood all year round – slatted bases and open fronts allow for good airflow
  • Tidy garden storage – no more piles of wood stacked against fences or sheds
  • Efficient burning – seasoned, dry logs burn hotter, longer, and cleaner, saving you money
  • Garden style – a well-built timber store adds rustic charm to any outdoor space

What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following:

  • Self-Assembly Large Log Store Kit (AH-LSL)
  • Firm, level base (paving slabs, concrete, or gravel for drainage)
  • Drill or screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Safety gloves and glasses

Pro Tip: Treat your timber with a wood preservative or protective oil to extend its life and help prevent weathering.

Step-by-Step Assembly

The Large Log Store kit includes:

  • 1 x Base
  • 2 x Side Panels
  • 2 x Back Panels
  • 1 x Roof
  • 8 x 60mm Screws
  • 11 x 80mm Screws

Step 1: Assemble the Sides and Back

  • Fix one back panel to one side panel using four 80mm screws.
  • Repeat for the other side panel, then secure the two back panels together with the remaining 80mm screws.

Step 2: Attach the Base

  • Position the base and fix it in place with four 60mm screws through the pre-drilled holes (two screws on each side).

Step 3: Fit the Roof

  • Place the roof section on top.
  • Secure it with four 60mm screws through the underside of the top frame of each side panel into the roof panel.

By Sunday evening, you will have a sturdy, weather-resistant log store ready to keep your logs in perfect burning condition.

Caring for Your Log Store

This log store is built from pressure-treated softwood, designed to resist rot and fungal attack. However, as with any natural timber, some movement, cracks, or colour changes may occur over time — this is normal.

  • Apply a clear wood preserver or oil every few years for added protection
  • Keep the store on firm, level ground to minimise warping
  • Maintain airflow by stacking logs loosely inside
